Have you ever gone through a period of time when you felt like God really wasn’t listening to you? Maybe you’ve been praying and it just seems like God’s ignoring you. Maybe you’ve been having a quiet time every day, but it doesn’t seem like you’re getting anything out of it. Does this mean God has forgotten about you?
NO!! Hebrews 13:5 says:
God has said, “Never will I leave you; never will I forsake you.”
So, if this is true, what’s going on when we feel like He’s so distant? For me personally, I think that I’m just not listening very well for His voice during those times. I believe that God never stops trying to speak to us. When we feel like we’re not hearing Him anymore, maybe it’s time to try listening a different way.
The cool thing about God is that He’s not as limited as we are in how He can communicate. We pretty much have words and body language and that’s it. God has all of creation to work with. When you see a beautiful sunset, God’s saying something. He created your eyes and your mind to see that sunset and to recognize how breathtakingly beautiful it is. So maybe His message there is that He’s madly in love with you and He wants to show you something special. You might think of it as God bringing you flowers.
God also speaks through other people and through our relationships. He speaks through our friends, our parents, our teachers, our brothers and sisters, and anyone else we come in contact with. God designed us to have relationships with other people, and it’s within those relationships that God reveals some of His love for us. The way your parents love you, the way your friends love you – that’s God giving you a taste of the different ways that He loves you.
Next time you’re feeling like you’re not hearing from God, take a minute to look around you. It can be something as simple as stopping to smell a flower or accepting a hug from a friend. He’s crazy about you, and He never wants you to forget that.
